Dr Wendel Abel is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Therapist, who has over 25 years of experience providing counselling services, cognitive behaviour therapy, drug counselling and marital counselling to clients in a variety of treatment settings. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, a Diploma in Psychology and a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI), as well as a Master of Public Health from John Hopkins University. Dr Abel is currently the Head of the Department of Community Health & Psychiatry at the University of the West Indies, Mona. He is a member of the Medical Association of Jamaica, Jamaica Psychiatric Association, Cochrane Mental Health Research Group and the American Psychiatric Association. Dr Abel has been instrumental in formulating several mental health policies across the region and has written several newspaper articles, academic papers and case reports for the government and mental health agencies. A true patriot, he has dedicated his life's work to improving the lives of his fellow countrymen and raising public awareness about mental health issues. He has established several group homes for the treatment of mentally ill patients, and currently offers visiting consultation to the Community Group Home for adults and children with challenging behaviour and/or coexisting psychiatric illnesses. Through a multidisciplinary approach to psychiatric treatment, Dr Abel utilizes evidence-based methods to deliver the best care to his clients.
