As we approach the biggest shopping season of the year, we try to find ways to stretch the dollar a little farther. So we seek out bargains, discounts, specials, etc, which may or may not work.

What always works, though, is finding a store that is consitently reasonable in its prices. Here we have prepared a list that you might wish to consider before you do your Christmas shopping. 

And remember, we're shoppers too!

 

1. Sampars Cash and Carry

Clean and moderately spacious

Sampars is a growing supermarket chain owned by Derrimon Trading which itself has been in operation for over 30 years.
From farm produce to baked items to canned stuff, Sampars has any item you would expect a supermaket to have, and then some. They offer online shopping as well and from reviews on their Facebook page, they can deliver within 24 hrs.

2. Shoppers Fair Supermarket

The Shoppers Fair Chain of supermarkets, owned by Progressive Grocers, purchase their supplies in bulk quantities in collaboration with other independent retailers, who nonetheless come together under the Progressive umbrella. These savings are then passed on to consumers. The supermarkets are spacious, usually with a wide variety of brands.

3. Loshusan Supermarket

Loshusan is also an affiliate of Progressive Grocers and they have a really wide variety of items on display. The feedback in terms of customer service and prices is positive. One customer said their bakery makes the best birthday cakes. Another said “Excellent service. It has all that I need. Excellent layout, fresh fruits and vegetables. Clean refrigerators and very helpful staff.”

4. Hi Lo Food Stores

Hi Lo is a supermarket chain that claims to be high on quality, low on prices. It is a subsidiary of GraceKennedy and one would expect benefits to flow from such a connexion. They do stock a wide variety of products and brands (not just Grace) and they have an interesting buzzword: FS5, which refers to Fresh Stores, Fast Service, Frequent Savings, Full Shelves, and Friendly Smiles.

5. AJ's Supermarket

Unfortunately, they seem not to have much of an online presence, however, AJ’s Supermarket gets lots of favourable reviews online, especially in respect of its customer service and prices. Even the owner/manager is given compliments. Seems to be the ‘hands-on’ type. One reviewer who gave them 5 stars said this: Affordable prices , well stocked, friendly staff, humble CEO.

6. SNC Supersave

This rural area supermarket, in the parish also known as the bread basket, gets lots of complimentary reviews from its clients. Most are in agreement that the prices are reasonable. One reviewer complained that it is too clustered. Another that there is not enough parking space. But, from the feedback, if what you are looking for is affordable prices, this SNC is a good choice.

John R Wong has been around for about 40 years. They sell a wide variety of grocery, meats, produce, pet foods, household items and personal hygiene items. They get mainly favourable reviews online. One satisfied customer had this to say: Hands down the best supermarket in New Kingston (possible All of Kingston) WHATEVER you need they have.

8. Fresh Approach Supermarket

Fresh Approach opened its doors in 2006, originally offering farm fresh produce and popular Chinese staples. Today they offer items from other countries in Asia, not just to its local ethnic market, but to locals who are fond of Asian cuisine- and that’s not a small number. Listen to the words of this reviewer: “This is Chinese Heaven. Everything for your Chinese palette.”

9. National Self Serve Wholesale

National Self Serve Wholesale is one of only two rural based supermarkets to make it to this list. A self serve wholesale, so it is like a hybrid of a supermarket and a wholesale. So it is supposed to be the convenience of supermarket shopping at wholesale prices. The absence of air conditioning makes the experience not as comfortable as you may like, but if you are willing to give that up for affordability, then National Self Serve is worth a visit.

10. Lee's Food Fair

'Tis the season

Lee's is one of the oldest supermarkets in Jamaica, having started in 1960. Lee's makes the claim to be dedicated to providing convenient and customer friendly shopping experience for every member of the family. One customer claims to have been shopping there for over 20 years. Sounds like a family affar fi real. Compliments are given lavishly to cashiers and packers and there is no complaining about the prices. One customer gave this simple feedback: "Pleasant, efficient staff, reasonable prices.'
